Plastic-Free July Inspires Nairn Sustainability
Plastic Free July is here, and it is the perfect time for Nairn businesses and residents to step up. This global initiative encourages us all to reduce single use plastics and make smarter choices. But we do not need to look far - Nairn already has inspiring local champions leading the way.
The Highland Weigh - Nairn’s Zero Waste Pioneer
Since opening in November 2022 at 3b High Street, The Highland Weigh has diverted over 45000 pieces of plastic from landfill by July 2024 thanks to its refill dispensers and zero waste ethos. Founder Amanda Macarthur turned a bamboo toothbrush into a whole new way of living, building a store and café where customers bring their own containers for food, toiletries and more. They are hosting community Climate Cafés and reducing waste one refill at a time. More
Green Hive - Transforming Plastic into Purpose
Green Hive, a local social enterprise, has installed the Highlands’ first hot press machine to recycle end of life plastics into sheets and custom furniture. Each sheet pressed equals 25 kilograms of plastic saved from landfill, while providing skills and volunteering opportunities. They have already tackled beach litter and textiles, turning waste into vibrant community outcomes. More.
Council and Community - Top Up Tap and EV Charging
Nairn’s Council has installed a Top Up Tap near Lochloy Caravan Park, offering free drinking water and reducing reliance on plastic bottles. EV charging points are increasing across town, helping drivers go electric and reduce environmental impact. Community groups like McDonald’s Nairn and Green Hive organise beach cleans and litter picks to protect our coastline.

Small Steps, Big Difference
You do not need radical change to make an impact. Here are simple and effective ideas inspired by local action:
Bring your own bottle – fill up at Nairn’s Top Up Tap instead of buying bottled water
Refill and reuse – take reusable containers to Highland Weigh for bulk shopping
Support green initiatives – shop with businesses like Highland Weigh and Green Hive
Volunteer locally – join a beach clean or community recycling event
Go electric – try the EV charging points around town when you can
